More and more consumers today have become aware of the potential health hazards of BPA exposure. Numerous studies have suggested that BPA can negatively impact human health. Infants and young children are especially sensitive to its effects.

Alarmingly, a 2004 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found BPA in nearly all human urine samples, suggesting that exposure is widespread across the United States. Since then, more and more focus has been put into packaging made without materials containing BPA. Here at North Coast Organic, we are very much concerned about BPA, and we are helping consumers limit their exposure by storing all of our delicious apple products in BPA free packaging.

What is BPA and why is it harmful?

Bisphenol A, or BPA, is an industrial chemical that has been used to make some plastics and resins since the 1960s. It is found in many of the hard plastic items that we use every day. Products that may contain BPA include: water bottles, baby bottles, and the inside coating of food and drink cans. BPA may also be found in some dental fillings and sealants, dental devices, medical devices, eyeglass lenses, DVDs and CDs, household electronic items, and sports equipment.

BPA is harmful because it is an endocrine system disruptor. The endocrine system includes all the glands in your body that make hormones, which regulate your growth, metabolism, and sexual development and function.

According to a May 2017 article in Medical News Today, there are many ways that exposure to BPA may impact your health:

  •          Reproductive disorders – BPA exposure can affect egg maturation in humans.
  •          Heart disease – Research has linked even low-dose BPA exposure to cardiovascular problems.
  •          Type 2 diabetes – Low-level exposure to BPA could contribute to insulin resistance.
  •          Fetal brain development – Environmental exposure to BPA has the potential to affect the developing brain during gestation.
  •          Breast and prostate cancer – BPA, with its estrogen-like behavior, could increase the risk of breast, prostate, and other cancers in people who were exposed to it in the womb.
  •          Asthma – Exposure to BPA before birth may increase the risk of wheezing and asthma.
