Here at North Coast Organic, we love the holidays for many reasons. One of them is the abundance of fresh, sweet apples. To share our love of this heavenly, healthy fruit, we wanted to share a few ideas for how doing things with apples can help make the holiday season even more special.

Bob for apples – Autumn Apples

Bobbing for apples that have been placed in a large tub of water with your hands tied behind your back can enliven any holiday party and bring on waves of laughter. But, did you know that there is also a waterless version? Here is how to make it happen. Pick a few beautifully ripe apples and tie strings to their stems. Then, hang each individual apple by its string to a clothesline draped across a room or outdoors between any two stable, high objects. Participants must eat the majority of their chosen apple without using their hands. It doesn’t get more fun than this!

Make wild bird feeders from apples

If you have children and love bird watching, creating a bird feeder with real apples and bird seed can be a fantastic family project. It’s a fun way for you and your kids to get to know which birds are native to your area. There are many recipes available on the Internet, but one of our favorites comes from Natural Beach Living.

Use fresh apples as holiday decorationsWinter Apples

Because apples come in a variety of beautiful green and red colors, they make perfect holiday decorations. To create a memorable table centerpiece, fireplace mantle décor, or table arrangement, start with a base of rustic autumn leaves. If you prefer, use holiday greens, such as holly, evergreen branches or bay laurel. Then, arrange multi-colored apples in interesting configurations on top. Intersperse candles, set in nonflammable containers, in-between the apples. You can also core a few of the apples, and fill the cores with individual candles.

Dry apples for homey Christmas tree ornaments

If you are putting up a Christmas tree, you can create a truly unique look by including freshly dried apples as ornaments. Start by slicing fresh apples in ¼ inch cross sections. Coat the slices with lemon juice to keep them from turning brown. Transfer to a baking sheet and bake at 200 degrees for 4-6 hours, turning the fruit slices about once per hour. Once they are done and cooled, string them with twine and add ribbons, bells or pinecones. Get the full recipe here, as well as instructions for a dried fruit wreath.

Give Halloween Apple treats or stocking stuffers

Apples can provide a healthy alternative to the usual stocking stuffer candy, or at least a good addition. If you are worried about giving out fresh apples, however, North Coast Organic has you covered. We make apple sauce in pouches for delicious and satisfying treats all year long. Kids love our four varieties of apple sauce: regular apple sauce, apple sauce with cinnamon, fruit+veggie apple sauce, and apple sauce with probiotics. Because our apple sauces can be squeezed right from the pouch, kids don’t need a spoon to enjoy them!
